largest squash seed

Post by HermitJohn on Wed Jan 20, 2010 1:46 am

Was trying to post this to a thread on another forum, but forum froze and wouldnt let me post. Anyway was trying to determine largest squash seed figuring it would be easiest to husk.

As far as original question: pink banana is around 1300 seeds per pound, Rouge Vif d'Etampes pumpkin is around 1500 seeds per pound, and blue hubbard is around 1700 seeds per pound. So all three are simular large size.

The pink banana is something like 70#...WOW.... and c.maxima. The Rouge Vif d'Etampes is like 15# and c.maxima. Their are some small hubbard varieties around 5# but with the large hubbard size seed. Hubbards are c.maxima. I remember trying the Rouge Vif d'Etampes some years back and vaguely remember it was very large seed.

Bit more info why I mentioned c.maxima above:

There are four groups in the squash family. One of each may be grown in close proximity to the others and crossing will not occur. In one corner of a garden you can grow Delicata (pepo), Butternut (moschata), Green & White, Cushaw (mixta) and Green Hubbard (maxima). If the garden areas are large enough to separate squash patches by up to 200 feet, with garden, trees, or scrub growing in between, you may grow another set of the four kinds of squash. Basically these groups are as follows:
PEPO: summer squash; (scallops, zukes, crooknecks), pumpkins, acorns, delicatas, spaghettis, sweet dumplings
MAXIMA: buttercup, marrow, banana, kuri
MIXTA: cushaws
MOSCHATA: butternuts, tahitian

Made small order at Baker Creek. They had Tuxpan Squash that I'm going to try. Mexican squash grown for its seeds. 5 pound squash with very little flesh apparently, but filled with lot of big seeds. Its mixta, I think.

Tuxpan seed are interesting, they do have a silver edge. Got banana squash seed. they are thick but not any bigger than most squash seed. Guess thickness makes them weigh more thus less seed per pound. Didnt get any of the Rouge Vif d'Etampes pumkin, just had too many squash all ready and be nightmare keeping them all from mixing. I do remember they had rather large seed.

See if the tuxpan and banana squash are something I like. If not then order the Rouge Vif d'Etampes next year.
